Heavy fog delayed play early on and meant that both the semi-final and final would be played over 14 holes (teeing off from 15). As a result going down early on wasn’t really an option. With this in mind, Jack just about held on to his opponent in the early stages, getting himself out of trouble with several key up and downs. After making the most of his oppositions misjudged shot on 6 from the heather into the water a birdie on 7 quickly turned things around. However, a loss on 9 and two missed birdie putts on the 10th from both saw the match halved. Directly behind Sergej was all square going up the 9th but a misjudged pitch saw him roll back down the slope before the green, a mistake his opposite number took advantage of. In the end a brave up and down on the 10th wasn’t quite enough. Having been 3UP at one stage Jamie had let things slip and had to hit a remarkable pitch out of the trees on 9 to go down the last hole 1UP. A solid par secured the all important victory. Cheung having been 2UP with two to play thinned a chip through the green on 9 and shanked his tee shot on 10. Unbelievably his opposite number let him off the hook with a shocking three putt from 12 feet. With a half all that was needed Sanghoon’s three putt from 12 feet on 9 and a bogey on 10 left the match tied. With both teams watching on anxiously Jack and his opposite number played down the 11th for a result in their previously halved game. After driving it into the heather the boy from Rugby managed to muscle a high draw to the back edge of the green. Jack having played safe, after his opponent’s error from the tee, knocked his second onto the right-hand side of the green, leaving himself a good 30 feet. When the boy from Rugby overcompensated for the slope and left his ball 8 feet short Jack rolled his ball to within a foot or two. After the Rugby ball slipped by the right edge, Jack drilled home the short putt to secure his side’s place in the final.

Plate Final vs. Charterhouse

1. Keating – lost 6&4
2. Stojiljkovic – lost 4&3
3. Joshua – lost 5&4
4. Cheung – lost 3&2
5. Oh – lost 2&1
Boys – 0        Charterhouse – 5
A grim affair from a Winchester perspective. Jack’s unblemished record (8 wins from 8) at the Gerald Micklem was ripped to shreds by the Charterhouse first seed who shot -2 over the 10 holes. Things weren’t much better behind. Sergej was unable to match the brilliance of his opposite number, the head boy of Charterhouse. Jamie was striking the ball beautifully, but couldn’t buy a putt on a day when his opposite number was unable to miss. Sanghoon and Alex fought hard at the back but also came up short. Whilst the team’s performance was rather disappointing, congratulations have to go to Charterhouse who deserved the silverware on this occasion.
