OWGS vs. Notts Golf Club (Hollinwell) – Sunday 15th November
With other commitments having to take priority the Captain’s tour was replaced with an inaugural 1 round, 4 ball-better-ball match against Hollinwell, and a fitting tribute to David Wybar’s excellent captaincy of the society over the past two years.
The match result, 0-4, was not the tribute the society may have wished for David, but a strong team including several Hewitt players and Hewitt contenders was fielded. The top match of Holt and Lewis were pitched against the resident Pro (Mike Bradley) and his more than able 5-handicap partner, and having fallen into an early deficit, 3 down after 4, held on competitively, frightening their oppo with prodigious length, but were unable to reel them in, losing 4/3.
Charles Dinwiddy, making his return to Hollinwell after a 50 year gap, having endured the earliest start, and some navigational challenges, was paired up with Ben Twiney. Fighting as ever throughout they also found the oppo quality difficult to match, also losing 4/3.
In the third match George Close-Brooks and Mark Coulman fell behind early, but fought back, largely due to some prodigious hitting and nerveless putting from George, to level the match after 12, only to be hit by back to back birdies, running out 3/2 losers. The final match had all the experience required to bring in a point with David Wybar and Chris Fell teaming up for the umpteenth time in OW colours, and despite fighting hard and with David’s thorough course knowledge also failed to overcome the local talent, running out 3/2 in the end.
A thoroughly enjoyable day on one of the finest inland courses in the UK (in fantastic condition, with generous hosts and great company, was had by all, and it’s to be hoped that this fixture will become a regular on the OWGS circuit. Thanks to all for making the effort to head north.
