OWGS v Old Westminster at RSG – 28th March 2015
A first loss of the season for Old Woks Golf….
Sadly the damage was done in the morning for OWGS (Winchester!) which can only be blamed on the oppo keeping us waiting on a chilly 10th tee (dubious excuses involving late taxis and traffic on the A2) or the handicapping which had seen an absent team captain (GC-B) sign his team up to handicaps which looked aggressive or fanciful depending on your point of view! it has been noted that the late call-up for Westiminster, a 21 hanidcapper bagged two points on the day. But who would we be to argue with a High Court judge!
Winchester rallied in the afternoon adding some form of respectability to the score.
Many concluded their matches at a sensible hour, however, Will Moore and Tristan Hanson enjoyed emerging victorious from an epic encounter. It all started with Morse snapping his driver in a kümmel-fuelled rage on the first tee. Clearly, it was a cunning tactic to intimidate the opponents with the imperious 3-iron tee shots which followed, a consistent 20 yards beyond the opponent’s drive. Much of what followed veered from the sublime to the ridiculous. “Who wants it?” was the cry by the 13th, won with a dogged 6. Slightly miffed by the four shots conceded, an even more cunning tactic was to wait until darkness fell before using superior eyesight to spring the surprise of winning the last three holes for a 1-up victory, the first time we’d snuck ahead since the 6th.
