Ian McCausland

We are sad to report the death of Col. Ian McCausland, a former Captain and President of the OWGS, who has died aged 78 at his home in Stockbridge, near Winchester, on August 16.

A distinguished sportsman at school, Ian was in Lords for three years, and in the Commoners VI for two in the early 1950’s. His career was in the Army and he captained the Army Golf Society in 1977/8. On retirement he served for many years as Regimental Secretary of his beloved Royal Green Jackets.

Ian represented the Old Wykehamists for 11 years in the Halford Hewitt between 1970 and 1983, winning seven and halving four of his 23 matches.

He captained the Society in 1992/3 and served as President from 1998/2000 during which time he did much to help improve the standard of the boys at the school by organising lessons for them.

These included sessions from the assistant pros at the Berkshire, where he was a member at the time; from Malcolm Scott at the school; and, on a notable occasion there, from Nick Faldo who gave his time in return for a day’s fishing with Ian.

There are a few members of the current Hewitt side who will recall those occasions and are doubtless grateful for Ian’s efforts on their behalf.

We will publish funeral details once they are made known.
