Halford Hewitt 2014

Winchester will play against Lancing in the first round at Royal Cinque Ports GC, Deal at 3:20 p.m. on Thursday 10th April – the final tee time of the first day. After four successive first round defeats, equalling our worst run ever, we are hoping to beat Lancing in which case we will play the winner of Watson’s and Cheltenham in the second round, also at Deal, on the Friday afternoon.
We have played against Lancing four times in the past, beating them in the 1st round in 1951 (when Geoff Paine, our one-legged golfer, made his only appearance in the tournament) and in the 2nd round in 1959 and losing to them in the 1st round in 1971 (Gerald Micklem’s final match) and in the 2nd round in 2003.
We will field a strong team with only Paddy Buckley, Mark Coulman and Freddy Manduca not available for selection. The selectors have pre-selected Claudio Consul, Tom Hawkings, Nick Holt, Richard Sanders, Dino Varkey and Jay Varkey and will announce the full team after the Captains’ Foursomes weekend at Royal St. George’s GC, Sandwich on 15th & 16th March – all of those who are in contention for the final four places are playing in this event which this year is being played as a competitive Under 40s v Over 40s match.
Any support at Deal will be much appreciated by the players and all supporters will be welcome to join the team for dinner that evening at The George & Dragon, Sandwich and/or the previous evening when Winchester and other schools will be attending a black tie dinner at Royal St. George’s GC
If anyone would like to attend either dinner, please let Nick Holt know so that he can make the appropriate arrangements
I hope to see a number of OWGS supporters at this year’s tournament
