Halford Hewitt 2016

The team fared reasonably well at the Halford Hewitt, beating a strong Clifton team 4-1. To beat Clifton (winners in 2010) so easily was a terrific team performance and the talk of the clubhouse. Clifton was the only school that we had played – once in the 3rd round in 2009 – and not beaten. All five pairs played well.

We then played Watson’s on Friday morning who were very good, significantly stronger than two years ago when we lost narrowly with two or three very good young players. However, we didn’t play as well as Thursday in general although George/Jack ran up against a pair in form (4 under par after 7)

We continue to make progress- a big win against a school as good as Clifton is really encouraging and the only disappointment was that we didn’t run Watson’s closer. The top game ran away from us and it was all over suddenly

A good week, although a pity not to be playing against Tonbridge at Deal on Saturday morning.

A few comments with apologies for the prominence given to Claudio & Dino who are (without question) one of the top pairs in the tournament as well as one of Winchester’s best pairs ever

1. Team – the current team strength (measured by points scored in matches over a five year period and the records of the players and pairs in the team) is the highest since 1970

2. Pairs

2.1 Having won 9 matches out of 10, Claudio & Dino have the 2nd best record of all Wykehamist pairs behind only Loveday & Read who won all 6 matches played together in 1931 & 33. Their win against Watson’s was Winchester’s 550th point in the tournament

2.2 Tom Hawkings & Nick Holt have played 14 times together – only seven pairs have played more often

3. Individuals

3.1 Claudio’s two wins in 2016 bring him into the top 10 and close to the magical 70% barrier attained by a select few but only by Murray Lawrence over the past 50 years

3.2 Tim Lewis is unbeaten in his 5 matches played to date – one more than Vernon Maxwell (Patrick & Alastair’s grandfather) who won all 4 matches played in his only tournament when we lost in the final in 1926

3.3 Tom Hawkings (29) is closing in on Tim Bebb’s record (31) for consecutive years

3.4 Tim Lewis is Mark Coulman’s 15th partner although John Adams’s record (20) is some way off

4. Houses

4.1 With Christian Portz playing, Trant’s continued its unbroken run of fielding at least one player in every year since 1970

4.2 Conversely, Freddie’s continued an unbroken run of not having a single player in the team since 1951

4.3 Chawker’s fielded 3 players (Close-Brooks, Holt & Lewis) for the first time

Best wishes to you all

David
