Claudio Consul wins the 2015 President’s Putter

We finally have a new Wykehamist winner of the President’s Putter!
Claudio (not hard to guess which player was successful out of the 4 OWGS entrants) gained the winner’s medal this afternoon after beating Ben Keogh (third final) 2/1 having beaten Charlie Rotheroe (3 previous wins) this morning 4/3. Claudio was steady this afternoon and spectacular this morning – out in 30/31 and dropping only one shot all morning to par.
As David W will know, our only previous winner was Gerald Micklem in 1953.
I am also pleased to report that Claudio had a good OWGS caddie all day, who happened to know the rules a bit when needed.
One other Wykehamist organised a very good Putter dinner (not surprising as he is Publican of the Year), a fairly old Wykehamist was a joint winner of the Croome Shield (scratch foursomes medal) for the fourth time and a younger old Wykehamist won one round but found himself unable to be free to play Stracey in the 2nd round.
So – an unusually successful Putter meeting for Winchester and a good omen for the Hewitt. Photographs of the event were taken by Edward Webb (X) and should be available in due course. He is sending one to the Trusty Servant and I hope that Claudio will report his triumph to that publication as well.
Only three Wykehamists have appeared in 2 finals – Micklem (4), AJ Evans (2) and Consul (2) – and, as David says, only Micklem had won it. Micklem went on to win the English Amateur in 1953 – let’s go on and win the Halford Hewitt in 2015
