Golf Quarterly – A Plug!

To those of you that don’t subscribe, I can whole heartedly recommend Golf Quarterly as a fine addition to your golf journal collection. Aimed more at the more genteel side of the golfing world, it is amusing and often features tales, anecdotes, quizzes and profiles that are often very close to home. So much so, that there is a decent write-up of the recent Halford Hewitt and Winchester’s success. Can […]

Winchester WIN The Halford Hewitt – With some extra pictures included

Dear fellow OW golfers   It gives me enormous pleasure to tell you that Winchester are the proud winners of the 2018 Halford Hewitt Cup. Now there’s a sentence that I expect many of you never anticipated reading.  But the team of ten outstanding Old Wkyehamist golfers won this most prestigious tournament through talent, preparation and determination.   For those of you who might not know, the Hewitt, as it’s […]

Tom Hawkings at The Frame Trophy

Last weekend Tom competed at The Frame Trophy; held at Worplesdon each year – named after the legendary David Frame).  It is the only over 50 Open Competition (most senior events being over 55). Despite having the yips in the first round and missing 5 short putts (the shortest was about 1ft) and having a triple bogey at the second hole in the last round, Tom managed to come 3rd, three shots behind […]

OWGS v Notts GC (Holinwell) – 6th August – 2 players needed for 6th August

All, We have two places available in this match on Saturday 6th August versus the club at Holinwell – one of the best inland courses in the UK. We started this match last year and it really was a fantastic event with amazing hospitality. We have moved it to the Summer to get the course in best condition. Teeing off at 10am, the match is 4 ball better ball so […]

OWGS at the Alba Trophy and Claudio Consul at the European Mid Amateur

Tom Hawkings and George Close-Brooks represented the OWs in the Alba Trophy on Saturday at Woking. GCB writes – In the morning our play was a little patchy but benefited from an aggregate putting footage that must have exceeded 200 feet (Spieth-esque): an outrageous 70 footer at the 6th for birdie by Tom, followed by 25 foot for another birdie on the par three 7th and a similar length for […]

OWs v Old Blundellians, 2nd June at Bristol & Clifton Golf Club

The annual match competing for the eccentric golfer trophy started in cold windy weather but finished in glorious sunshine on a course which was looking and playing its very best.  That could not, however, also describe the fortunes of the OWs. The first pair, Robert Skinner (guest) and Christopher Cornell came unstuck against a pair of OBs who belied their 12 and 13 handicaps by going round in a better […]

OWGS v Rye

The match OWGS v Rye went ahead on Saturday 21 May.  A little damp for most of the morning but glorious in the afternoon.  Course in wonderful condition but rough, often not far off the fairway, was difficult, ankle deep at best and clinging.  Sadly, Nyren Scott Malden had to withdraw on Friday afternoon – knee trouble. So, in the morning we were 9 plus Rye captain, Oliver Saxby, became […]

OWGS v Huntercombe 1st May 2016

The teams assembled on a beautiful May morning, both sides reduced to 7 players. Several keenly fought matches ensued, with OWs prevailing in 3 of the four morning matches. After a very pleasant and convivial lunch there were not sufficient OWs left to provide a full side for the afternoon (the youngest member of the team (Nyren Scott-Malden) is 65). The morning rounds therefore constituted the full result, with the […]

Halford Hewitt 2016

The team fared reasonably well at the Halford Hewitt, beating a strong Clifton team 4-1. To beat Clifton (winners in 2010) so easily was a terrific team performance and the talk of the clubhouse. Clifton was the only school that we had played – once in the 3rd round in 2009 – and not beaten. All five pairs played well. We then played Watson’s on Friday morning who were very good, […]

OWGS v Old Westminster – Saturday 2nd April @ Royal Saint George’s

On a  beautiful Saturday morning, that should signs of pushing Winter to the recent memory, the OWGS played against Old Westminster – a match remains one of the most enjoyable on the calender. The course was in fantastic condition with the greens becoming quicker and more true with the recent better weather. Spoils were shared through the morning after a re-jigged line up that had all the hallmarks of a […]
