2015 Aldington Match
In glorious weather a side of OWs visited Hockley for the annual match against The School. In accordance with the format for the weekend set by Lord Aldington, past Warden, we played 8 singles under handicap and then had a dinner in the Lodgings where excellent food and wine were served and senior men attended with dons and the Second Master and his wife. The next day, after Chapel and a reflective sermon from the Headmaster on whether he believed in angels, four “greensomes” matches were played for double points. In the singles, the top three boys all triumphed in level matches against Bonsall, Fell and Wybar while the might of Hanson, Patrick Maxwell, Christopher Normand, Close-Brooks and the master in charge of golf, Rob Moore, all managed to prevail. Clearly some of the boys had indulged well overnight and the OWs (reinforced with Tusa and Twiney for Hanson and Normand) won all four matches for a comfortable victory. Patrick Maxwell also managed to fit in three rackets matches to get some meaningful exercise.
The top 3 boys are all on “golfing bursaries” and showed their skills to good effect – we hope that the other boys will look up to them and improve as well.
During the dinner, it was noted that our OWGS Captain had been recently appointed the Chairman of the Amateur Status Committee for the R&A and so, with David Bonsall also in post as Chairman of the Rules Committee, OWGS has an unprecedented position in the governance of the game.
